Resumo: The study evaluated the cross-reactivity of the Platelia Aspergillus enzyme immunoassay (EIA) with serum samples from patients infected with Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, Histoplasma capsulatum, Cryptococcus neoformans, and Cryptococcus gattii. This assay is designed to detect galactomannan, a component of the Aspergillus cell wall, and is commonly used to diagnose invasive aspergillosis (IA).
Using a cutoff optical density (OD) value of 0.5, the positivity rates for cross-reactivity were as follows:
- P. brasiliensis: 50%
- H. capsulatum: 67%
- C. neoformans: 63%
- C. gattii: 37%
The findings suggest significant cross-reactivity among these fungal pathogens, especially in regions where paracoccidioidomycosis and histoplasmosis are endemic. The study also highlights the potential for false-positive results in the galactomannan test when diagnosing IA in patients with other fungal infections.
It emphasizes the importance of considering clinical and epidemiological data when interpreting positive galactomannan test results. Additionally, variations in galactomannan levels may occur due to antifungal treatment or storage conditions of serum samples.
